English is a fundamental skill that tourism industry players need to have, especially to support promotion at an international level. Top tourist attractions such as Kota Tua Gorontalo, Saronde Island, and Gorontalo Bay have great potential to attract foreign tourists. However, tour guides and destination managers need to be able to explain local uniqueness, history, and culture well in English. Without these communication skills, Gorontalo tourism stakeholders will find it difficult to reach the global market and improve their competitiveness. Therefore, mastering English is not just a matter of individual ability but a strategic investment for the development of Gorontalo tourism.
At present, the willingness of local human resources (HR) to support English language tourism is still developing. Some initial steps have been taken, such as short training sessions for people around Saronde Island and Kota Tua Gorontalo. However, the results are not evenly distributed, as many tourism stakeholders still lack English communication skills. For example, the ability to speak spontaneously or explain complex information is often a major challenge. This situation confirms the need for training programs to be more systematic, to involve local communities directly involved in tourism management, and to be based on real needs on the ground.

For example, the ability to speak spontaneously or explain complex information is often a major challenge. This situation confirms that training programs need to be more systematic, involve local communities directly involved in tourism management, and be based on real needs on the ground.
The biggest challenge is limited access to quality training, especially for people living in remote areas. In addition, community motivation to learn English is often low. This is due to a lack of understanding of the role of English in supporting the success of the tourism sector. On the other hand, the educational infrastructure, such as relevant teaching materials, professional trainers, and learning facilities, is still inadequate. These challenges make the workforce development process more complex and require a more inclusive and sustainable approach.
An integrated and results-oriented strategy is needed to meet these challenges. Government, educational institutions, and the tourism industry must work closely together. Community-based English language training programs, such as the successful one in Kota Tua Gorontalo, should be extended to other areas. This training should also be tailored to specific local needs, for example, by focusing on tourism-related vocabulary such as culinary, history, and ecotourism. The use of technology, such as English learning apps and interactive digital media, can be a solution to reach more trainees. In addition, incentives for people who are actively learning English can be a trigger for increased motivation.
The capacity of Gorontalo's human resources to support English-speaking tourism is a critical element in raising the region's tourism potential to an international level. Although the training program is underway, there are many opportunities to improve its effectiveness. The expansion of community-based training, the use of modern technology, and cross-sector collaboration are steps that cannot be ignored. With this approach, local human resources will not only become more competent but will also be able to compete in the global tourism industry. Solid and sustainable collaboration between all parties is the key to making Gorontalo a highly competitive and sustainable leading tourism destination.
